Play dough kits have certainly risen in popularity over the last year or two, and for good reason! With an increasing emphasis on Montessori education and play, sensory play dough kits that include natural elements like pine cones or craft supplies like pipe cleaners are perfect little additions to a preschool classroom. However, some of the kits that come with all of the little tools and accessories can be a bit on the pricey side. This mini pie playdough kit is an easy, DIY activity that your kids will love. Encourage their cooking creativity by helping them make pretend pies in their play kitchen, while they practice their fine motor skills.

If you want to be the favorite aunt or uncle, you could make up a few of these kits to bring for the little kids who will be joining your Thanksgiving celebration. These make a quick and easy gift that is so much fun and smells amazing! With real pumpkin and apple pie spices, this homemade playdough recipe is always a huge hit. With a few simple ingredients, you can make the softest homemade playdough that will entertain kids for hours.

what you will need for a fall pie playdough kit –

  • Mini pie plates– I purchased this 6-pack of pre-made mini graham cracker pie crusts and just popped the crusts out to use the mini pie plates.
  • Wooden rolling pin
  • Wooden knife
  • Tan colored felt or fabric
  • Apple pie play dough
  • Pumpkin pie play dough
  • Airtight container

The most important part of these kits is the homemade playdough! There really is nothing like homemade playdough. It is so much softer and lasts so much longer than store bought playdough. One thing I love the most about making our own playdough is that I can customize the colors and scents! We love to add a little essential oil to each batch to make it smell nice, in this case – like pie! Another perk of making your own is that you can ensure all of the ingredients are non-toxic in the event that someone might be curious about the taste.

ingredients for fall pie playdough –

  • All-purpose flour
  • Salt
  • Cream of tartar
  • Water
  • Vegetable oil or coconut oil
  • Food coloring
  • Essential Oils
  • Spices

For this activity, I chose to make two kinds of fall pie playdough- one that resembles apple pie and one that resembles pumpkin pie. I decided to add real apple and pumpkin spice, so I started out by making my own spice mixes. You could certainly use storebought spice mixes, or follow these recipes to make your own-

apple pie spice mix:
  • 4 Tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground nutmeg
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cardamom
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
pumpkin pie spice mix:
  • 3 Tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 2 teaspoons ground nutmeg
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground allspice
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cloves

how to make fall pie playdough kits –

Make the playdough by stirring together the dry ingredients in a large pot – flour, salt and cream of tartar. Next, add water and oil. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly. Continue stirring until the dough has thickened and forms a ball. Remove from heat and allow to cool until it can be handled.

Divide the dough equally in two portions.

To make apple pie playdough, add apple pie spice and/or essential oils. I used one drop each of cinnamon, orange, ginger, clove and nutmeg. I also added a few drops of non-toxic red food coloring to make a pretty red play dough. Knead in the spices, oils and food coloring until totally combined. Add more food coloring to adjust the color as needed.

To make pumpkin pie playdough, add pumpkin pie spice and/or essential oils. I used one drop each of cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and cardamom. To this one, I added red and yellow food coloring to give it a nice orange color. Knead in the spices, oils and food coloring until totally combined. Add more food coloring to adjust the color as needed.

Next, cut out the tan felt into a wavy circle to resemble the shape of a top crust on a pie. I used this top crust shape and also some thin strips of tan felt so the kids could make a lattice top on their little pies.

Add some little wooden rolling pins like these or wooden knives to complete the fall pie playdough kit! These would be so cute packaged in a jar or box for the little in your life this fall season. If you want to add to the pie theme, this is a great book that we loved reading along with this playdough activity.

One of our favorite fall books to read!

I hope your kids enjoy making their own little pies! Happy Thanksgiving!
